Kat Layton is the new Social Worker for the Ingham County Office of Public Defender. Kat earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. As a graduate student, Kat worked alongside an attorney writing narratives for juvenile lifers with the hopes of mitigating their sentences. Additionally, Kat was a research assistant for a qualitative case study, interviewing released juvenile lifers and identifying themes where points of intervention could have been made. Kat has worked both capital and noncapital cases in her career and has led a number of initiatives. Presently, Kat is a member of the Voting Access for All Coalition and the Metro Detroit Restorative Justice Network through the Detroit Justice Center.
Outside of work hours, Kat enjoys eating and trying different foods with her fiancé. Together, they like to travel and explore different parts of the world. Kat’s favorite trip was to Chattanooga, TN where they went free climbing outdoors on various large boulders. They have two dogs, Zola and Millie Lou, that fill up a lot of their free time! Their entire family enjoys long walks in different parks around the neighborhood.
